Kampala, Uganda: The Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) President, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, officially launched a public fundraising campaign on Monday, an initiative aimed at mobilizing financial resources for the party’s participation in the 2026 general elections.

“Today at our headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, we have launched a global fundraising drive to raise money and other material resources necessary to take us through the forthcoming general elections. We have constituted a Committee led by Hon. Balimwezo Ronald Nsubuga to oversee this exercise. Other members of the Committee include Hon. Kaaya Christine Nakimwero and Ms. Fatuma Kassim,” the NUP posted via its official X handle on Monday evening.

Unlike the ruling NRM, which Bobi Wine says has access to vast state and party resources, the opposition party is depending on public support to fund its campaign infrastructure ahead of what it calls a decisive electoral battle.

“We are a people-powered movement. We don’t have the luxury of state coffers, but we have millions of Ugandans, here and in the diaspora, who believe in change,” said Bobi Wine in an appeal issued over the weekend.

The fundraising drive, DailyExpress understands, will be coordinated by Hon. Balimwezo Ronald Nsubuga, with the support of Hon. Kaaya Christine Nakimwero and Ms. Fatuma Kassim, according to the party secretariat.

Donors, according to NUP officials, are expected to contribute via designated mobile money numbers and bank accounts, while those wishing to deliver physical contributions to the NUP headquarters in Kamwokya will be received by the organizing committee.

To encourage participation, the NUP has introduced a tiered donor recognition scheme. Supporters contributing UGX 100,000 and above will receive certificates ranging from One Star to Five Star, depending on their level of commitment.

“This fundraising is not just about money. It is about ownership of our struggle. We are giving Ugandans a chance to say, ‘I contributed to the change I want to see,’” said Bobi Wine, appealing especially to the diaspora community, which has consistently backed the party’s operations.

“Every contribution is acknowledged with an official receipt, although contributions above UGX 100,000/= additionally get a Certificate of Appreciation. Contributions in cash or in kind (such as branding material, fuel, non-monetary services, etc) are all welcome,” he emphasized.

The fundraising campaign comes as political parties begin mobilizing resources for the 2026 election cycle. NUP insiders say the funds will be used for candidate nomination fees, campaign logistics, training, legal aid, and voter protection efforts.
