NRM Primaries: Namisindwa candidates launch joint campaigns, but incumbents absent

NRM supporters gather in Bukokho Sub-county on Monday, July 8, as party candidates kicked off joint campaigns across Namisindwa District amid noticeable absenteeism from incumbents.

Namisindwa, Uganda: The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) on Monday, July 07, launched joint campaigns across Namisindwa District, covering Bubulo East, Namisindwa County, and the Woman MP seat, alongside LC5 chairperson aspirants.

But the absence of key incumbents sparked voter dissatisfaction, with some accusing them of dodging scrutiny.

The LC5 campaign trail kicked off in Bukokho Sub-county and Bumbo Town Council, while Bubulo East hopefuls held rallies in Namboko, Nabitsikhi, and Bubutu Town Council.

Namisindwa County candidates started their mobilization in Buwatuwa Sub-county, although a delay occurred after some contestants protested the inclusion of Musamali Gerald, alleging he had not officially resigned his post as the party’s administrative officer.

Conspicuously absent was Namisindwa County incumbent MP Hon. Apollo Masika, who has reportedly battled illness for several years.

The incumbent LC5 Chairperson, Mr Jackson Wakweika, also stayed away, citing security concerns and an inability to manage large rallies. Their continued absence raised eyebrows among voters, some of whom accused them of avoiding accountability and public engagement.

While addressing voters in Bukokho, LC5 contender Situma Maango urged constituents to back experienced leadership, vowing to “restore credibility and visibility” in local governance.

Another LC5 candidate, Emma Bwayo, emphasized the importance of electing leaders who are not just visible during campaigns. “Let’s vote for leaders who will remain with the people even after elections,” he said, calling for peaceful and mature campaign conduct.

NRM District Chairperson Aramazan Wabuko admitted there were logistical challenges, including sound equipment issues, but promised improvements as the campaign progresses.

On the matter of separate campaign trails requested by some incumbents, Wabuko said the final decision rests with NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi, but reaffirmed the district’s preference for unified mobilization.

“We believe in joint campaigns. Our candidates should be seen together, selling the NRM message as a team,” Wabuko emphasized.
