Katikkiro Mayiga decries use of witchcraft in Masaza Cup tournament

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga addresses Masaza Chiefs at Bulange, where he warned against use of witchcraft in the ongoing Masaza Cup tournament.

Bulange, Uganda: The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has issued a stern warning to Masaza Cup teams and their supporters against resorting to witchcraft (“juju”) in their quest for football glory, urging a return to discipline, training, and sportsmanship.

Speaking during a strategic meeting with Masaza Chiefs at Bulange, the administrative seat of the Buganda Kingdom, the Katikkiro expressed concern over persistent reports that some teams were engaging in superstitious and mystical practices in hopes of influencing match outcomes.

“The Masaza Cup is a celebration of youth talent, unity, and sportsmanship. People should refrain from using juju to win. These cups are not won through superstition, but through discipline, strategy, and hard work,” Mayiga said.

The Katikkiro called on team managers, coaches, and supporters to uphold the values of fair play, stating that the Masaza Cup should serve as a platform for nurturing talent, not perpetuating fear or ignorance.

“Let us promote a culture of honesty and healthy competition. Our young people need role models who lead with integrity, not shortcuts rooted in fear or ignorance,” he added.

The Katikkiro’s remarks come amid an intensifying tournament season, with heightened rivalries across counties (Masaza) in the Buganda Kingdom.

Over the years, allegations of witchcraft have occasionally marred some matches, prompting concern from cultural leaders and sports administrators.

The Masaza Cup is one of Buganda’s most prestigious annual sporting events, bringing together youth from the kingdom’s 18 counties to showcase football talent, cultural pride, and unity. It has also become a springboard for several national-level players.
