UPDF soldier kills fleeing suspect after daylight MM robbery in Kampala

Kitintale, Uganda: A suspected armed robber was shot dead by a UPDF soldier while fleeing from a botched daylight robbery at a mobile money shop in Kitintale, a Kampala suburb, while another suspect was arrested in a Thursday morning operation, police confirmed.

The incident occurred near Access Building in Kitintale after two men armed with a rifle stormed the mobile money outlet, held the agents at gunpoint, and began packing cash into bags.

“The suspects held up two mobile money agents, Ibrahim Ssebanenya and Rashid Kyeyune, demanding money at gunpoint,” Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango stated on Thursday afternoon.

The victims, according to Onyango, managed to escape and raise an alarm, prompting a swift response from Kitintale Police and local residents, who began pursuing the suspects.

“One of the robbers, identified as Farouk Matovu, was intercepted and arrested with the help of community members,” police said, adding that he is being held at Jinja Road Police Station.

The second suspect fled toward Bugolobi, firing gunshots into the air to scatter boda boda riders and deter police officers trailing him.

However, the escape ended fatally when a UPDF soldier, who was guarding a private residence in Bugolobi, opened fire and killed the armed fugitive. “We recovered a rifle and two short magazines from the deceased. The scene was secured and is being processed by detectives,” SSP Onyango said.

Police said investigations are ongoing to determine how much money was stolen during the attempted robbery and whether the suspects were part of a larger criminal syndicate.

The latest incident has reignited public concern over the rising attacks on mobile money operators, who have become regular targets for armed criminals in Kampala and surrounding areas.
