Mogadishu, Somalia: The Commander of Uganda’s United Nations Guard Unit XI (UNGU-XI), Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, has rallied female Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) officers deployed in Somalia to remain vigilant and committed to their security mandate under the UN mission.
While addressing female combatants at the UNGU-XI headquarters on Friday, July 11, Lt Col Barigye commended the troops for their discipline, resilience, and unwavering professionalism, which he said had become instrumental in the success of the mission.
“You must remain alert and ensure that our security is not compromised,” Lt Col Barigye told the troops. “Your presence and performance are central to the success of this mission.”
He emphasized the need for cohesion, unity, and mutual support, particularly among female personnel operating in high-threat zones across Mogadishu and the broader Lower Shabelle region.
Al-Shabaab Pushed Back in Lower Shabelle
Lt Col Barigye lauded the recent operational gains by the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and the Somali National Army (SNA) in Lower Shabelle. A joint operation, codenamed “Operation Silent Storm,” successfully dislodged Al-Shabaab militants from Sabiid and Anole—areas previously used by militants to launch coordinated attacks against UN and ATMIS bases.
“Their liberation marks a significant step forward, but we must stay alert to any potential threats,” he warned.
Troops Encouraged to Prioritize Morale and Health
Major Jacob Gowan Kaburika, the UNGU-XI Administrative Officer, urged deployed troops to maintain frequent contact with their families to enhance morale and emotional support.
“Staying connected with your loved ones boosts morale and provides emotional support. It’s an important part of your well-being while on deployment,” he said.

Meanwhile, Major Teopista Opar Giramia, the unit’s Female Engagement and Gender Officer, reminded officers that health, wellness, and situational awareness are mission-critical.
“Your physical and mental fitness directly affects your effectiveness,” she noted. “We operate in a dynamic environment. Take your well-being seriously and remain alert at all times.”
The meeting was part of routine engagements held to ensure troop readiness, foster operational focus, and enhance the welfare of personnel deployed under the UN flag in Somalia.
Uganda’s UN Guard Unit XI, composed of elite UPDF troops, is tasked with securing UN personnel and installations in Somalia under the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).
