London, United Kingdom: Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82, his family has confirmed.

Bashir Ahmad, his former aide, broke the news on X on Sunday, revealing that the former leader passed away in a London clinic.

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” Ahmad posted.

President Buhari served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, having earlier ruled the country as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985.

He was widely known for his anti-corruption drive and efforts to stabilize Nigeria’s economy during his tenure.

Details regarding his burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in line with Islamic rites.
