Kampala, Uganda: Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has paid glowing tribute to the late Justice (Rtd) Prof. George Kanyeihamba, describing him as a towering figure whose contributions shaped Uganda’s legal and academic landscape.
In his heartfelt eulogy posted via official X handle, Tayebwa recalled a memorable encounter with the late Kanyeihamba during a Thanksgiving celebration at Namirembe Cathedral in 2023, a moment he says vividly returned to him upon receiving news of the retired Supreme Court judge’s passing.
“Professor Kanyeihamba was a beacon of wisdom, resilience, and patriotism. His unwavering dedication to justice, nation-building, and mentorship left an indelible mark on Uganda,” he said.
The Deputy Speaker lauded the deceased as a distinguished author, revered retired Supreme Court Judge, former Cabinet Minister, and Member of Parliament, noting that Kanyeihamba’s contributions to Uganda’s constitutional development, academia, and judiciary were both immeasurable and eternal.
“Through his writings, legislative influence, and decades of teaching, Professor Kanyeihamba fundamentally shaped our legal system and jurisprudence. His landmark judgments will continue to guide generations of legal minds and stand as a testament to his brilliance and unwavering commitment to justice,” Tayebwa added.
On a personal note, Tayebwa expressed gratitude for the inspiration and guidance the late jurist offered him over the years. “I am profoundly grateful for the inspiration and guidance he offered me, both academically and politically. His wisdom and example deeply enriched my own journey in public service,” he said.
Tayebwa described the passing of Justice Kanyeihamba as “a monumental loss” for Uganda. “Uganda has lost one of its greatest minds, and we mourn this monumental loss. I extend my deepest condolences to Professor Kanyeihamba’s family, his friends, and all Ugandans who cherished and admired him.”
“May the Lord grant him eternal rest and continue to bless and comfort his family,” he concluded.
Justice Kanyeihamba’s influence, which closed eternally with his death on Monday, July 14, extended far beyond Uganda’s borders, with his works cited in academic institutions globally. His publications on constitutional law, democracy, and governance continue to shape legal debates in Africa and beyond.
