Kampala, Uganda: Four officers from the Uganda Police Flying Squad Unit, accused of aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit a felony, have been further remanded to Luzira Prison after their scheduled court appearance at Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court was adjourned to July 29, 2025.
The accused are Detective Superintendent of Police (D/SP) James Besigye, 38, Detective Corporal (D/CPL) Simon Owona, 36, Detective Constable (D/C) Pracid Abdul Mulangira, 33, and Detective Constable (D/C) Monday Tibaijuka, 35.
The quartet had returned to court for an update on the progress of investigations but were informed that Trial Magistrate Frank Namanya was away from his station.
Grade One Magistrate Andrew Katurubuki ordered the suspects to remain in Luzira Prison until their next appearance after state prosecutor Mahatima Odongo informed the court that investigations are still ongoing.
During a prior appearance on July 11, 2025, Magistrate Namanya had reprimanded the officers for attempting to hide their identities under hooded jumpers and ordered them to show their faces openly in court.
According to the charge sheet, the accused officers and others still at large allegedly robbed Mr. John Vian Tumukunde on May 9, 2025, along Solent Avenue, Nakawa Division, Kampala.
The stolen property included one kilogram of gold valued at USD 105,000 and USD 1,000 in cash. Prosecutors say the suspects were armed with a pistol and AK-47 rifles during the robbery.
