Kampala, Uganda: Singer-turned-politician Hajjat Stecia Mayanja, now President of the newly formed National Peasant’s Party (NPP), has come out to clarify that her political ambitions are not aimed at undermining Bobi Wine or the National Unity Platform (NUP), but rather to challenge President Museveni and the ruling NRM government.
Speaking out amidst public criticism and speculation surrounding her recent unveiling as NPP president, Stecia dismissed claims that her party is a Museveni-sponsored project meant to fragment the opposition.
“I am not fighting Bobi Wine, and I can’t fight him. My fight is with Museveni, the elephant that can’t be hunted by one person alone. Let me chase him from this side, as Bobi Wine chases from the other. Together, we shall defeat him,” Stecia Mayanja clarified.
The former musician, who recently returned from Canada after three years abroad, said her entry into politics stems from the need to uplift the peasant communities and offer a platform that speaks directly to the struggles of ordinary Ugandans.
Since her unveiling, critics, particularly from opposition circles, have accused newly formed political parties like the NPP of being “business ventures” or tools to weaken the NUP’s urban and rural support base ahead of the 2026 elections.
However, Hajjat Stecia Mayanja insists her political mission aligns with broader opposition efforts to end President Museveni’s decades-long rule.
“We are all fighting for the same cause, change. It doesn’t matter which path we take; what matters is removing the oppressor,” she noted.
The singer’s remarks come at a time when the Ugandan political landscape is growing increasingly fragmented, with numerous new parties being formed ahead of what analysts predict will be one of Uganda’s most fiercely contested elections in history.
