Police impound taxi, hunt passenger in viral TikTok stunt

A scree grab from a viral TikTok video shows a man seated dangerously on its roof in Kampala.

Kampala, Uganda: The Police in Kampala have launched a manhunt for a TikToker who was captured in a now-viral video where he appeared seated on top of a moving taxi, in what authorities have described as a reckless and illegal stunt.

The incident, which unfolded along one of the city roads over the weekend, sparked widespread outrage after the footage circulated on social media, prompting swift action from traffic police.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the vehicle involved in the stunt has since been traced and impounded, and the driver has been charged with carrying a passenger in a dangerous position.

“We managed to trace the vehicle carrying someone on top of its bed. It was impounded, and the driver was charged accordingly,” Owoyesigyire confirmed in a statement on Monday.

“The TikToker reportedly paid the driver 20,000 shillings for that stunt. However, the individual himself has not yet been traced, but efforts to locate him are ongoing,” he added.

The viral video shows the unidentified man seated on the taxi roof as the vehicle speeds through busy traffic, with no apparent concern for safety. Police say this behavior not only endangered the individual’s life but also posed a risk to other road users.

Authorities have cautioned members of the public against engaging in similar acts, warning that both participants and facilitators of such stunts face criminal charges under Uganda’s traffic laws.

Traffic police have since warned both motorists and members of the public against such reckless behavior, emphasizing that similar incidents will attract severe penalties under Uganda’s traffic regulations.

Investigations remain ongoing as police track down the individual involved in the viral stunt.
