From Street to Stardom: Bugembe’s journey of faith inspires Victoria University Students ahead of 20-year concert

Pastor Wilson Bugembe shares his inspirational journey from the streets to gospel stardom with Victoria University students ahead of his 20-Year Music Celebration.

Kampala, Uganda: Pastor Wilson Bugembe’s moving story of faith, resilience, and transformation, from a street child to one of Uganda’s most celebrated gospel musicians, left Victoria University students inspired as he launched his upcoming 20-Year Music Celebration Concert.

The concert, scheduled for August 8, 2025, at Kampala Serena Hotel, will celebrate Bugembe’s two decades of ministry and music.

Speaking to over 1,000 students gathered at the university’s auditorium for the July–August intake orientation, Bugembe shared his testimony of overcoming poverty, loss, and hardship through faith in God, hard work, and persistence.

“I lost both my parents and ended up on the streets of Kampala, sleeping outside shops with no hope,” Bugembe started. “My life changed when a stranger took me to church. That small act of kindness saved me.”

The celebrated gospel artist recalled how church members raised a special offering to help him buy basics like a mattress and clothes, marking the start of his journey toward healing and purpose.

Today, Bugembe is the lead pastor at The Worship House in Nansana and runs Mercy Child Care Centre in Wakiso, offering hope and shelter to orphaned children, just like he once was.

Bugembe thanked Victoria University and MTN Uganda for being the first to sponsor his milestone celebration. “This is the first time a university has supported my concert, and not just any university, but one transforming lives,” Bugembe said.

“Prof. Muganga has given five children from my orphanage full bursaries. I don’t pay a single coin. That’s a heart for God and for the future.”

Bugembe urged students to build personal relationships with God, citing Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd.” “Without a shepherd, you have no guidance, no protection. A life led by God leads to purpose,” he told the attentive audience.

Victoria University Vice Chancellor Prof. Lawrence Muganga praised Bugembe as a living testimony of faith, resilience, and transformation. “Bugembe is not just a performer. He is one of the most inspiring Ugandans of our time. We’re proud to stand with him in celebrating this incredible milestone,” Prof. Muganga said.

He challenged students to maximize their time at the university by dreaming big and solving real-world problems. “Here, you’ll study for only 15 hours a week, use the rest to create something impactful,” he said.

“We’re also considering to offer you laptops on a three-year loan scheme because this is a digital world. Use the internet, AI, and your creativity to build your future beyond the classroom.”

Bugembe closed the event with a lively sing-along of his popular gospel songs, handing out free concert tickets to students who impressed with their performances.

With the backing of Victoria University and MTN, the upcoming concert promises to be a night of celebration, faith, and reflection on 20 years of music, ministry, and miracles.
