IGG Kamya reveals what exactly is major driver of corruption in Uganda

Kampala, Uganda: The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Beti Kamya, has identified public complicity and glorification of wealth without scrutiny as one of the key factors fueling corruption in Uganda.

Speaking during a recent media engagement on the fight against corruption, Kamya noted that Uganda has struggled with corruption for decades because many citizens admire and celebrate individuals who acquire wealth quickly without questioning the source of their riches.

“One of the promoters of corruption is public complicity and glorification of corruption. When someone gets rich quickly, people hail and applaud them without asking how they got the money. If we all asked the right questions, there would be no corruption,” she said.

The IGG pointed out that while government agencies continue to devise new ways to fight corruption, the attitudes of ordinary Ugandans remain a significant obstacle. She warned that failure to hold corrupt individuals socially accountable enables them to thrive and normalizes unethical behavior.

It should be remembered that President Museveni previously cautioned Kamya about the delicate nature of fighting corruption, warning that corrupt officials often exploit their illicit gains to invest outside Uganda, complicating recovery efforts.

Kamya’s remarks come at a time when Uganda’s fight against corruption remains under scrutiny, with several high-profile investigations ongoing.
