How Busoga North Voted: Confirmed winners in Buyende, Kamuli, Kaliro and Luuka Primaries

Busoga North, Uganda: The National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries across the Busoga North districts of Buyende, Kamuli, Kaliro, and Luuka concluded Thursday evening with surprising outcomes, including the fall of several incumbents and the rise of new political faces.

In Buyende District, Namulondo Sarah Owekitambaala emerged victorious in the Woman Member of Parliament race after securing 80,685 votes, to defeat the incumbent Mary Annet Nakato, who polled 57,394 votes, while Achom Robinah trailed with 24,952 votes.

For Budiope East Constituency, the Minister for the Presidency, Hon. Milly Babirye Babalanda, swept to victory with 99,832 votes, representing 81% of the total vote to defeat Mutagaya Denis, who garnered 12,940 votes, while incumbent MP Kyoto Ibrahim managed 9,895 votes. Other contenders, George William Tibatesa, Mukisa Edward, and Fred Mbaziira, polled marginally.

Relatedly, FUFA President Moses Magogo Hashim, also in Budiope East, comfortably defended his party flag with 63,758 votes, defeating Dhamuzungu Geofrey, who secured 15,177 votes, and Mulire Daniel, who garnered 212 votes.

In Kamuli, only First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga survived the sweeping tide against incumbents, clinching a landslide win with 104,770 votes to retain her District Woman MP flag.

For Kamuli Municipality, Mastula Namatovu triumphed with 8,460 votes, defeating the incumbent Baroda Kayanga (2,830 votes) and other contenders, Kazungu Apollo David, Walujjo Samuel, and Mudungu Karim.

Buzaaya Constituency was among the tightest races, where Bamusibule Kintu Paul narrowly edged out incumbent Martine Muzaale Mugabi with 17,675 votes against Muzaale’s 17,597 votes. Other aspirants, including Musumba Isinga Isaac, Waiswa Andrew, Musuza Steven, and Amex Ssebidde, posted modest tallies.

In Bugabula North Constituency, Anita Flavia Omondi secured victory with 17,201 votes, unseating incumbent John Taira, who polled 8,910 votes. Ntende Julius and George Mulindwa also contested but failed to mount a significant competition.

While Bugabula South saw Bazanya Mathew defeat incumbent Maurice Henry Kibalya with 17,193 votes against Kibalya’s 5,727 votes. Dhizaala Sanoni Moses, Kalulu Ivan, Kasolo Gerald, Kategere Thomas, and Kamya Moses completed the field with scattered votes.

In Luuka District, 2021 runner-up Nabirye Annet defeated former Minister for the Presidency Esther Mbayo, securing 27,492 votes against Mbayo’s 6,800 votes. Other contenders, Kabukye Evelyn and Kawowo Resty, polled 3,777 and 3,781 votes, respectively.

In Luuka South, incumbent Stephen Kisa Bakubalwayo defended the party flag with 15119 votes, fending off stiff competition from Don Vincent Bwana, who polled 9,424 votes, while Kibira Daniel followed with 7,279 votes. The rest of the field included Waiswa Juma, Samanya Adonia Shalifu, Batwala Shaban, and Katende Gideon, all trailing far behind.

For Luuka North, John Ngobi Bagoole secured victory with 9,283 votes, ahead of Balondemu David (7,283 votes) and incumbent Kyobe Luke Inyensiko, who polled 9,010 votes. Meddie Mulumba trailed with 2,740 votes.

In Kaliro District, incumbent Woman MP Hon Brenda Namukuta secured the win to defend her party ticket, while Bulamogi Constituency saw Bwire Sanoni Nadeba comfortably retain the party flag with 49,721 votes, beating Mutesi Bernard Mugoya with 30,787 votes and Simon Muhanga Lutaaya with 5,483 votes.

In Bulamogi North West Constituency, Kasajja George Patrick won with 18,407 votes, overcoming incumbent Ngobi Fredrick Gume, the State Minister for Cooperatives, who managed 12,856 votes. Other candidates included Ndyadi Laban with 3,438 votes and Musazi Ivan with 250 votes.

The results from Busoga North NRM Primaries highlight the shifting political landscape in the subregion ahead of the 2026 general elections, with several prominent incumbents edged out by both fresh contenders and more determined political returnees.
