Kampala, Uganda: The trial of nine youths accused of defaming Rubaga Miracle Centre lead pastor, Dr Robert Kayanja, resumed Friday at Mwanga II Magistrates Court, with the fourth defence witness giving an unsworn testimony.
Labib Khalifa, 24, who has been on remand for over four years alongside his co-accused, opted out of giving a sworn statement after initially indicating he would do so. This decision shielded him from cross-examination, limiting prosecution avenues to test the veracity of his claims.
Appearing before Grade One Magistrate Adams Byarugaba, Labib narrated a story stretching back to 2017, alleging that he first encountered Pastor Kayanja through youth activities at Rubaga Miracle Centre, after being introduced by a man he met at Capital Shoppers, Bugolobi.
Labib claimed that Kayanja began offering him gifts, cash in both Ugandan shillings and dollars, and later invited him to his office after a night service, where he allegedly asked him to switch off his phone, remove his shirt, and watch adult videos. He further alleged inappropriate contact despite his resistance.
However, because his account was not given under oath, prosecution cannot cross-examine him, nor can the court verify the claims at this stage.
Labib further told court that by 2019, relations with Pastor Kayanja soured when he allegedly demanded UGX 340 million for what he claimed were unpaid dues for security work and farming activities in Kiryandongo, linked to Kayanja.
He later claimed the figure was reduced to UGX 162 million after deductions for rent and meals over 40 months.
The accused, who face charges of conspiracy to defeat justice, criminal trespass at Rubaga Miracle Cathedral, and giving false information to police, have all remained in custody since the case commenced.
Before Friday’s session began, Chief State Attorney Jonathan Muwaganya confirmed that the High Court had upheld an earlier decision banning live media coverage of the trial, following complaints that bloggers were sensationalising proceedings.
Magistrate Byarugaba reminded the court of the seriousness of the charges and emphasized the need for due process in the pursuit of justice. The case was adjourned to 28th August 2025 and additional dates in September for further defence hearings.
