Kampala, Uganda: The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), has accused the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) of deliberately disconnecting its mobile money number used for fundraising ahead of the 2026 general elections.
According to NUP, the mobile money line had been set up to allow supporters and well-wishers to contribute towards the party’s campaign activities. However, just days after launching the initiative, the party announced the number had been disconnected without any formal explanation.
Speaking to DailyExpress, George Musisi, the NUP legal counsel, said this action reflects what he called the NRM’s continued hostility towards multiparty democracy in Uganda.
“All parties should be encouraged to fundraise because it’s a good thing. It increases accountability as members ask how the money is spent. The NRM has never been interested in multipartyism. Even the mobile money number we provided to solicit funds was disconnected,” Musisi stated.
Musisi further accused President Museveni’s government of frustrating efforts by opposition parties to mobilize resources, describing it as a deliberate strategy to weaken political competition ahead of the 2026 elections.
NUP clarified that despite the sabotage, they have continued to receive donations through alternative channels, including cash deliveries to their offices at Kavule.
The opposition party said the move to block their mobile money fundraiser underscores the shrinking democratic space in Uganda, where opposition groups increasingly face barriers to organizing, fundraising, and mobilizing supporters.
