Mogadishu, Somalia: The Acting Director of Women Affairs in the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Colonel Lydia Nandudu, has challenged female combatants under the United Nations Guard Unit Eleven (UNGU-XI) in Somalia to uphold discipline, professionalism, and diligence as ambassadors of both Uganda and the UPDF.

Col Nandudu delivered her message during a routine operational visit focused on assessing the performance of female personnel and reviewing gender-related concerns in line with both UN standards and UPDF gender policy.

In her address, she reminded the troops of the heavy responsibility they carry in preserving Uganda’s reputation within the international peacekeeping mission. “To maintain a positive image of the UPDF and Uganda in such a mission, we must follow our professional standards with discipline and courage,” she said.

Col Nandudu further urged the women to rise above stereotypes, embrace their roles with confidence, and serve as trailblazers for future generations of female soldiers. She applauded the UPDF’s ongoing efforts to create more professional growth opportunities for women in service and encouraged the troops to make use of every chance for advancement.

“I implore you to be disciplined and take advantage of every opportunity for development, whether through professional courses or participating actively in drills and military activities,” she said. “Also, plan wisely for life after service by investing your earnings well.”

Lt Col Barigye, the mission’s senior officer, welcomed the delegation and appreciated the visit, noting its potential to uplift morale. He reaffirmed the UPDF’s commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering female soldiers within its ranks.

The engagement attracted both senior and junior officers serving in the mission area.
