Mukono, Uganda: Two Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers and three civilian accomplices have been arrested over the cold-murder of Wayengera Godfrey, a senior manager with Compassion International Uganda in Mukono District.

Wayengera, who was also director of Beloved Daycare and Nursery School, was kidnapped on June 10, 2025, by armed men dressed in clothing resembling UPDF uniforms. Hours later, his body was found dumped near a railway line in Namumira.

Police Spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma confirmed on Monday that a joint security operation had led to the arrest of five suspects, among them two UPDF soldiers, believed to be behind the gruesome attack.

“So far, five suspects have been arrested during ongoing operations, and we have recovered one SAR rifle, along with military and police uniforms,” ACP Kituuma said while addressing the press at Police Headquarters Naguru on July 21, 2025.

He identified the suspects as: Tumusiime Ashraf alias Obadiah (40), resident of Kireka, arrested at Ku Sattu, Kayunga Road, Mukono; Ssenteza Mike (40), from Wakiso, arrested at Busawuli Ward, Wakiso District, Kasolo Fahad (30), resident of Nabweru and Kireka, arrested on Kamuli Road, Kireka; Sgt. Mwesige Muhammad alias Jet Lee / Munamakerere (50), an army deserter, and Cpl Mugabe Borban Aspa, a serving UPDF officer, both residents of Kagugube, arrested in Wandegeya.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the suspects belong to a criminal gang targeting traders and travellers along Katosi Road in Mukono.

Preliminary findings, according to Police, indicate that the late Wayengera was travelling with his wife Christine Najjabi on June 9, 2025, from a burial in Mbale to Kampala when they were intercepted by armed men dressed in military uniform along the Katosi Road, Mukono.

Claiming they were taking the couple to Mukono Police for questioning, they instead diverted to Kyungu Road, where Wayengera was reportedly killed. Najabi was later dumped in Jinja Misindye, Goma Division, and rescued by locals who rushed her to Mukono General Hospital.

His wife, Christine Najjabi, was later abandoned in Jinja Misindye, Goma Division, from where Good Samaritans rescued her and rushed her to Mukono General Hospital.

“We would like to assure the public that security agencies are working tirelessly to ensure that this matter is brought to its logical conclusion. We shall continue to pursue all leads to bring those responsible to justice,” ACP Kituuma affirmed.
