Kampala, Uganda: Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena has sacked three members of the party’s Electoral Commission over what he described as gross indiscipline, betrayal, and overstepping their mandate.
The sacked officials include Jack Kabuusu (Vice Chairperson), Magere Emmanuel, and Aisha Naomi Natukunda.
Addressing journalists on Monday, July 21, Akena said the trio acted beyond their jurisdiction when they made unauthorised pronouncements on the UPC presidency and further communicated such pronouncements to the Electoral Commission without following proper party protocol.
“Communication between UPC and the Electoral Commission is done through systematic, organised channels—not through individuals acting on their own whims,” Akena said.
He accused the dismissed commissioners of disrespecting not only his office but the entire party structure, adding that their conduct exposed confidential party matters to the public in breach of party ethics. “It is betrayal to have inner party information paraded in the public domain. That is unacceptable,” Akena said.
The sackings come amid growing internal tensions within the UPC, with Akena acknowledging persistent in-fighting among top party officials as a significant distraction from the party’s goals.
“Instead of recognising that UPC is in a position to make a difference in Uganda, some of my cabinet members are more focused on quarrelling with each other. We are supposed to deliver hope to Ugandans, not waste time fighting within ourselves,” he said.
Observers say the latest fallout further exposes the deep divisions rocking Uganda’s oldest political party, already battling questions over its future relevance ahead of the 2026 general elections.
