Kampala, Uganda: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has ordered a crackdown on electoral malpractices within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, directing the arrest of eight party electoral officials implicated in vote-rigging and tallying fraud during the recently concluded party primaries.
In a tough statement issued Monday, July 21, 2025, President Museveni, who is also the ruling party’s National Chairman, condemned what he called “self-seekers” tarnishing the reputation of the NRM’s revolutionary legacy, warning that those involved will face criminal prosecution.
“I want to assure you that the state agencies of Uganda have started the necessary anti-crime actions against the self-seekers. They are starting with the clear cases of the idiots alleged to have altered the results in the tallying. Eight of them have been arrested from Mayuge, Buyende, Kapchorwa, Pader, Oyam, Rwampara, Kareenga, and Mbarara,” Museveni said.
He emphasized that investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected. The President urged the public and party members to provide further evidence on bribery, voter intimidation, and register manipulation during the primaries.
“These are crimes against the integrity of the NRM and Uganda’s democracy. We shall clean up the NRM as we defend the wider interests of Ugandans,” Museveni asserted, reaffirming his commitment to protecting the party’s ideological heritage rooted in sacrifice and patriotism.
To reinforce this clean-up effort, President Museveni announced the formation of a committee of senior lawyers tasked with handling petitions arising from the disputed primaries.
The President’s tough stance comes amidst rising discontent from within the NRM over alleged electoral irregularities, including bribery, intimidation, and manipulation of party registers in various districts ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Mr Museveni reiterated that the NRM’s revolutionary credentials, rooted in the sacrifices of NRA/FRONASA martyrs, must not be eroded by opportunists willing to compromise party values for personal gain.
