Speke Resort embraces eco-tourism, staff training ahead of UNESCO Engineering Week

Kampala, Uganda: Speke Resort Munyonyo, Uganda’s flagship five-star lakeside destination, is embracing eco-tourism and intensive staff capacity-building in preparation for the 11th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week and 9th Africa Engineering Conference, set for September 14–20, 2025.

Nestled along the shores of Lake Victoria, the 90-acre resort owned by the Ruparelia Group has stepped up sustainability efforts and professional development programs to cement its position as Uganda’s premier venue for international conferences.

Environmental Commitment

In March 2024, the resort marked Global Recycling Day by launching a green campaign focused on reducing single-use plastics, improving waste management, and promoting environmental awareness among staff and guests. The initiatives have since expanded to include energy efficiency, water conservation, and sustainable landscaping, reinforcing Speke Resort’s commitment to preserving the lakefront ecosystem.

The resort also sources fresh produce directly from local farmers, promoting regional agriculture and reducing its carbon footprint, moves that align with Uganda’s national eco-tourism strategy.

“Luxury doesn’t have to compromise sustainability,” a senior manager at the resort said. “Our guests can enjoy five-star comfort while contributing to a greener planet.”

Staff Training and Global Standards

Alongside environmental strides, the resort has invested heavily in staff training, focused on guest service, communication, conflict resolution, and operational efficiency. These programs are part of the resort’s broader goal to deliver world-class hospitality during international gatherings.

The state-of-the-art 4,000-seater Convention Centre at Speke Resort will host thousands of delegates during the upcoming UNESCO event. Recent successes, including the Africa AI Summit and the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, have tested and proven the resort’s event-handling capacity.

“We’ve built a team that can deliver excellence at scale,” a staff trainer revealed. “Our goal is to ensure every visitor experiences the best of Ugandan hospitality.”

Despite its achievements, the resort has faced occasional operational issues. A viral post in 2024 cited a scheduling mishap involving a wedding. While rare, such incidents have prompted a review of internal systems to enhance coordination during overlapping events.

Uganda’s Hospitality Benchmark

From Olympic-size pools and an equestrian centre to nine award-winning restaurants and a wellness spa, Speke Resort Munyonyo remains at the forefront of Uganda’s hospitality sector. Its efforts to merge sustainability with service excellence make it a model for other establishments eyeing international tourism and events.
