Adjumani, Uganda: The Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Adjumani on Wednesday granted bail to nine supporters of incumbent District Chairperson and NRM flag aspirant Ben Anyama, who were facing charges of malicious damage to property and assault causing bodily harm.
The accused, Eruaga Jovan, Andruga Emmanuel, Akule George, Vuziga Joel, Vundru Swaib, Ndreara Abraham, Anyovi Patrick, Anyanzo Ivan, and Oroma Isaac, were arraigned before Magistrate Michael Okot on the afternoon, who read out a total of four charges stemming from a violent incident that occurred on July 20, 2025, in Molukpwoda Village, Adjumani Town Council.
According to prosecution led by Resident State Attorney Simon Angumale, the accused allegedly smashed the windscreen of a vehicle and tore campaign posters belonging to rival NRM flag aspirant Mr. John Anyanzo, who is also contesting the LCV seat. They also allegedly assaulted Draga Kodili, Aluma Swaleh, and Gadafi Adrawa during the same incident.
All nine suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Counsel Brenda, appearing for the defense, applied for bail on constitutional grounds, citing Article 23(6) of the 1995 Constitution, which guarantees bail as a right. She further noted that the accused had fulfilled all legal bail conditions and produced substantial sureties who were close relatives.
“Article 28(3) of the Constitution presumes every accused person innocent until proven guilty,” she told the court.
Magistrate Okot, in his ruling, granted non-cash bail of Shs 1 million to each of the accused, with their sureties bonded at Shs 1.5 million non-cash. He ruled that the accused had met all the bail requirements and that bail is a constitutional entitlement.
“Court is satisfied because you have produced substantial sureties. Bail is a constitutional right,” said Magistrate Okot. The case was adjourned to August 15, 2025, for hearing.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the court session, Adjumani LC5 Chairman, Mr Ben Anyama, distanced himself from the violence and called for calm among his supporters.
“I strongly condemn any acts of lawlessness during this election period. Without peace and unity, the people of Adjumani will be the ultimate losers. Violence has no place in a civilized Uganda,” Anyama said.
