Kampala, Uganda: The family of the late retired Supreme Court Justice Prof. George Wilson Kanyeihamba has officially released the burial program, confirming that the celebrated legal rebel will be laid to rest at his residence in Buziga, Kampala, rather than his ancestral home in western Uganda’s Rubanda District.
Family sources revealed to DailyExpress that Buziga, where Prof. Kanyeihamba spent his retirement years, was selected as his final resting place in accordance with both his wishes and family consensus. This breaks with tradition, where many prominent Ugandans are typically buried in their ancestral homes.
Prof. Kanyeihamba, who passed away on Monday, July 14, 2025, at the age of 85, was one of Uganda’s most distinguished legal minds and a vocal advocate for constitutionalism, human rights, and judicial independence.
The official burial program released by the family and government coordination committee is as follows:
Today, Wednesday, July 23, a tribute session will be held at the Supreme Court, starting at 2:00 PM.
On Friday, July 25: Family will receive mourners at his Buziga home from 11:00 AM, followed by a service and tributes at 3:00 PM.
Monday, July 28: Church service at All Saints Cathedral, Kampala, from 9:00 AM, then an official vigil at Kabojja International School, Buziga at 3:00 PM.
Tuesday, July 29: Final funeral service at Kabojja grounds, 10:00 AM, followed by burial at his Buziga residence.
Born in Kinaba, Rubanda District, on August 11, 1939, Prof. Kanyeihamba served Uganda in numerous capacities, including as Attorney General, Minister of Justice, and later as a Justice of the Supreme Court from 1997 until his retirement in 2009. He was a key architect of Uganda’s 1995 Constitution, having chaired the Legal and Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly.
A holder of a PhD in Law from the University of Warwick, Prof. Kanyeihamba taught at leading institutions in both the United Kingdom and Uganda. In his later years, he served as Chancellor of Kampala International University and Kabale University.
He is survived by his wife Susan, children Sarah, Joel, Ruth, and adopted daughter Betty Nabitosi Kanyeihamba.
Tributes continue to pour in from across Uganda’s legal and political spheres, hailing him as a courageous voice who championed rule of law, human rights, and judicial independence even in the face of adversity.
