President Museveni (juggling the ball), is expected to officiate the launch of CHAN 2024 Uganda Chapter at Kololo this Friday, alongside Minister of Sports Janet Museveni and State Minister Peter Ogwang.

Uganda will host a number of group stage and knockout matches, with fixtures expected at the newly refurbished Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, among other upgraded venues.

Kampala, Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni is set to officially launch the Uganda Chapter of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 at Kololo Grounds this Friday, July 25, a move that reaffirms the government’s commitment to sports development and regional integration through football.

The Minister of State for Sports, Hon Peter Ogwang Ogwang, confirmed the development, saying the President will grace the high-level continental event at the invitation of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) chaired by First Lady Janet Museveni, who also serves as the Minister of Education and Sports.

“This launch marks a turning point in Uganda’s sports tourism agenda and sets the momentum for AFCON 2027, which we shall co-host for the first time,” Ogwang said on Tuesday.

Organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), CHAN 2024 will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, with the tournament set to run from August 2 to 30, 2024. It exclusively features players from domestic leagues, offering home-grown talent a continental platform.

Uganda will host a number of group stage and knockout matches, with fixtures expected at the newly refurbished Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, among other upgraded venues.

The Uganda Cranes, under the technical supervision of FUFA, are currently in intensive training camps as the team seeks to impress on home soil and advance beyond the group stage.

Friday’s launch will unveil Uganda’s official roadmap for the tournament, highlighting infrastructure readiness, stadium inspection updates, nationwide promotional campaigns, and plans for community and youth involvement

The event will attract senior government officials, CAF representatives, diplomatic envoys, private sector partners, and national sports leaders, signalling a whole-of-government approach to the tournament.

CHAN 2024 is widely regarded as a dress rehearsal for AFCON 2027, making Uganda’s performance in organisation and fan mobilisation critical ahead of the continent’s biggest football event.
