Kamuli, Uganda: Three senior NRM electoral officials from Kamuli and Buyende districts have been remanded to prison over allegations of electoral fraud during the recently concluded NRM primaries for Member of Parliament flagbearers.
The accused include Baliruno David, the Party Administrator, and Matovu Vincent, the NRM registrar for Buyende district, who are facing charges of forgery and uttering false documents. Gwambuga Godfrey, the Kamuli district registrar, faces additional charges of falsifying the tally register and conspiracy to commit a felony.
The trio appeared before the Chief Magistrate and were remanded to Kamuli and Buyende Prisons respectively until July 28, 2025.
Their arrest followed widespread allegations of vote tampering in favour of certain aspirants, with reports indicating that tallies from select sub-counties were manipulated to produce predetermined winners.
ASP Micheal Kasadha, the Regional Police Spokesperson for Busoga North, confirmed the charges and said investigations were ongoing to uncover the full extent of the alleged vote-rigging scheme.
“These arrests are part of a broader crackdown on electoral malpractice during the NRM primaries. The accused are believed to have altered tally sheets and submitted falsified results,” ASP Kasadha stated.
The NRM Electoral Commission has recently come under intense scrutiny for widespread irregularities in the party’s internal elections, prompting President Museveni to order investigations and hint at the formation of a special tribunal to handle related cases.
The accused officials will reappear in court next week for mention of the case.
