Kampala, Uganda: The Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), Joel Ssenyonyi, has demanded the arrest of First Son and Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, over a barrage of online insults, accusing law enforcement of applying the law selectively to shield regime insiders.
Hon Ssenyonyi made the remarks following the release of NUP mobiliser Noah Mutwe, who spent two months in detention for allegedly posting offensive communication.
“How many times has Gen Muhoozi abused people on social media? Why has he never been summoned to answer for his actions? Is the law only meant for the poor and powerless?” Ssenyonyi asked during a media engagement on Tuesday.
The LOP insisted that justice must not be selective and called on authorities to demonstrate impartiality in enforcing the Computer Misuse Act and other legal provisions.
“When is Muhoozi going to be brought to court, to answer for a similar offence? The law is selective in that it can’t punish certain types and categories of people? This needs to come to an end. Everyone needs to answer for their actions,” he stated.
The Nakawa West legislator, who also doubles as NUP Spokesperson, criticized what he called “institutional cowardice” in holding powerful individuals accountable, warning that such double standards continue to erode public trust in the justice system.
Ssenyonyi’s comments come at a time when opposition supporters have increasingly faced arrests over digital activism and critical commentary, even as public figures aligned with the ruling NRM engage in unrestrained online vitriol.
