Museveni roots for unity, tradition as he breaks ground for Lwattamu House at Mengo

President Museveni meets Buganda officials at Mengo and breaks ground for Lwattamu Mall; donates UGX 100 million to clan leaders' SACCO.

Mengo, Kampala: President Yoweri Museveni has rallied Buganda cultural institutions to preserve traditional values and promote unity during a landmark visit to Mengo, where he officiated the groundbreaking of the new Lwattamu Mall (House of Battaka).

The President, who was hosted by Buganda officials and clan leaders, affirmed the enduring role of the Bataka (elders), Balangila (princes), and Bambeja (princesses) in Uganda’s historical and cultural fabric.

“In our struggles against Amin and Obote, the Bataka, Balangila, and Bambeja rallied behind us,” said Museveni, reminding leaders of Buganda’s pivotal role in Uganda’s political liberation.

He emphasized the importance of protecting Uganda’s cultural roots, particularly through language, food, and clan identity.

“Clans are fundamental to our nation and promote unity,” he said, urging the Bataka to work closely with religious leaders to counter the modern erosion of indigenous culture.

The President praised the Balangila and Bambeja for working together to develop their communities and announced a personal donation of UGX 100 million to the Bukesa Abalangila n’Abambeja SACCO to bolster their income-generating activities.

The Lwattamu Mall project, situated on Buganda Kingdom land, is expected to boost economic activity in the area and reflects growing partnerships between traditional institutions and the private sector.
