NUP’s Rubongoya speaks out on Bobi Wine, protests and public expectations

Kampala, Uganda: National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya has come out in defense of party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, urging Ugandans to understand the immense responsibility leaders bear—particularly when they call for peaceful protests.

Speaking during a public engagement this week, Rubongoya said many people misunderstand the weight of leadership and unfairly question Bobi Wine’s decisions, especially when he mobilizes for demonstrations against the regime.

“Sometimes I pity my party president because when he calls for peaceful protests, they ask where his family is. When he doesn’t, they say he needs to call for protests,” Rubongoya said.

He emphasized that peaceful protests are legal under the Constitution, but noted the risks involved, pointing to past protests where ordinary citizens were injured, jailed, or even lost their lives.

“We want people to understand that this responsibility belongs to everyone. If an idea works, anyone can lead it. The demand for change is a shared cause,” Rubongoya added.

His comments appear to respond to growing public criticism that Bobi Wine keeps his family out of the fray, especially after flying them to the United States during the tense 2021 election period, while urging ordinary Ugandans to rise up against President Yoweri Museveni’s government.
