Mbale, Uganda: Learners and staff at Busiu Secondary School have warmly welcomed the upcoming subnational education conference proposed by His Highness Umukuka III Jude Mike Mudoma, the cultural head of the Bamasaaba people, slated for September 2025.

The announcement was delivered by Mr. Steven Masiga, the official spokesperson of the Bamasaaba cultural institution (Inzu Ya Masaaba), during his visit to Busiu SSS on Friday morning. Masiga revealed that the Umukuka aims to host a region-wide academic conference that will gather students from across Masaabaland to promote cultural discipline, education excellence, and unity among the Bamasaaba youth.

The Headteacher of Busiu SSS, Mr. Hebert Weboya, welcomed the initiative and pledged the school’s full cooperation with the institution of the Umukuka on educational matters.

“We are excited to be part of this noble cause led by His Highness the Umukuka III. At Busiu, we believe in nurturing holistic learners grounded in academic excellence, discipline, and culture,” Weboya said.

He further reported that since his transfer to Busiu SSS from Bududa SSS, the school has registered a significant increase in student enrollment. Among the ongoing projects under his leadership is the construction of a modern library aimed at fostering a better reading culture.

“Busiu SSS serves not only Mbale but also neighboring districts like Tororo and Butaleja. With the upcoming education conference, we are optimistic this will uplift academic standards across the region,” Weboya added.

Mr. Masiga, who arrived at the school at around 11:00 AM, addressed the student body during the morning parade. In his remarks, he merged cultural and legal perspectives, urging learners to uphold good morals and avoid harmful practices such as drug abuse.

“Legal studies have shown that drug use impairs intellectual potential. The Penal Code Act of Uganda provides for serious punishment for offences like defilement, rape, drug use, and theft,” Masiga stated.

He urged students to respect cultural norms and remain disciplined as a way of honoring the leadership of the Umukuka and preserving the Bamasaaba heritage.

“I bring you warm greetings from His Highness Umukuka III Jude Mike Mudoma. Let us build a generation that respects both education and our culture. Do not engage in any behavior that will undermine the values of Bukuka and Inzu Ya Masaaba,” Masiga said.

The cultural-led education conference is expected to attract participation from schools across Bugisu sub-region, with a focus on fostering unity, discipline, and academic excellence among learners.
