Five arrested over post-election violence in Luuka NRM primaries

Luuka, Uganda: Five suspects have been arrested following a violent post-election clash in Buwologoma, Bukanga Sub-County, Luuka District, after supporters of a defeated NRM candidate allegedly launched an attack on the camp of the declared LCV flag bearer.

Police say the violence erupted on Saturday evening after the yet-to-be-named former contender reportedly mobilised his loyalists to target the victor’s supporters, leading to scenes of arson and malicious damage.

“A case of arson has been reported in which a butchery was set ablaze, alongside malicious damage to a house,” said ASP Michael Kasadha, the Busoga North Regional Police Spokesperson.

A rapid deployment by law enforcement officers led to the arrest of five suspects, who are currently in custody and expected to aid the investigations.

“Further inquiries are ongoing to establish more facts and identify additional culprits behind the violence,” Kasadha said, adding that the public should remain calm and allow legal processes to take their course.

He appealed to candidates dissatisfied with the outcome of the NRM primaries to seek redress through the appropriate dispute resolution mechanisms rather than inciting violence.

The flare-up adds to mounting tensions across the region in the aftermath of the July 17 NRM primaries, which have already triggered a wave of petitions and accusations of electoral malpractice.
