Manchester, England: Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo has officially become Africa’s third most expensive footballer after sealing a high-profile £71 million move to Premier League giants Manchester United.
The 25-year-old attacker penned a five-year deal with the Red Devils, bringing to an end months of speculation and transfer wrangles surrounding his exit from Brentford.
Mbeumo, who was born in France but switched international allegiance to Cameroon, enjoyed a standout 2024/25 season with Brentford, scoring 20 goals and registering nine assists across all competitions.
His explosive form was instrumental in guiding the Bees to a 10th-place Premier League finish — their second-best ever.
Mbeumo’s link-up with fellow African forward Yoane Wissa proved devastating for opponents, as the duo became one of the most feared attacking partnerships in the league.
The £71 million fee places the forward just behind Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Ivory Coast’s Nicolas Pépé, both of whom were signed for £72 million by Napoli and Arsenal, respectively.
Mbeumo’s arrival at Old Trafford is expected to bolster United’s attack under new manager Erik ten Hag, who is looking to rebuild a competitive side ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
