Wreckage of the Toyota Hiace minibus that plunged into the river at Amungura Bridge crash claiming four lives on the Busia–Tororo Road

Busia, Uganda: Four people have been confirmed dead and 13 others seriously injured following a tragic road accident at Amungura Bridge along the Busia–Tororo Road on Tuesday morning.

The accident, which occurred at around 6:40 AM, involved a white Toyota Hiace minibus registration number UA 889AM, which was en route from Kampala to Tororo before the driver diverted through Busia in a bid to beat a traffic blockage along the Tororo highway.

Regional police spokesperson for Bukedi South, IP Mugwe J. Moses, confirmed that the driver lost control of the vehicle while approaching Amungura Bridge at high speed and knocked a 75-year-old pedestrian identified as Okedi Raymond, a resident of Amungura Village.

After hitting the pedestrian, the vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the Malaba River. Authorities said four passengers died on the spot, while the remaining occupants sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to Tororo General Hospital.

The deceased were identified as Onyango John (31), Owor Peter (26), Onyanga Michael (42), and Opendi Wilson (45). Their bodies were transported to Tororo Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.

“The District Traffic Officer (DTO) of Busia led a team to the scene and commenced investigations into the exact cause of the crash. The wreckage has since been towed to Busia Central Police Station for mechanical inspection,” said IP Mugwe.

The police have urged drivers plying long routes to exercise caution and avoid speeding, especially when using alternate routes unfamiliar to them.
