CHAN 2024: Traffic diversions, parking plan, out for Namboole matches

Kampala, Uganda: The Uganda Police Force has released a comprehensive traffic advisory for mobility ahead of the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 tournament, which Uganda is co-hosting with Kenya and Tanzania from August 2–29.

Uganda will host group-stage matches involving teams such as Algeria, Niger, Guinea, and South Africa, with all games set to be played at the renovated Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Addressing the media on Monday, SP Michael Kananura, the Public Relations Officer of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, outlined travel and traffic arrangements to facilitate the smooth movement of teams, officials, and fans during the month-long continental tournament.

Designated Training Grounds

According to SP Kananura, teams participating in CHAN 2024 Uganda Chapter will utilize the following venues for training:

  1. Mandela National Stadium Annex (Namboole)
  2. Wankulukuku Stadium
  3. KISU Grounds (Bukoto)
  4. FUFA Grounds (Kadiba Mengo)
  5. Kyambogo University Playground

Main Travel Routes from Entebbe International Airport

  1. To Speke Resort Munyonyo: Entebbe Expressway → Kajjansi → Munyonyo
  2. To Mestil Hotel: Expressway → Northern Bypass → Yusuf Lule Rd → Mukwano Rd
  3. To Serena Hotel: Expressway → Northern Bypass → Yusuf Lule Rd → UBC Roundabout
  4. To Skyz Hotel: Expressway → Northern Bypass → Kira Rd → Bukoto
  5. To FUFA Hotel Kisaasi: Expressway → Northern Bypass → Kisaasi Roundabout

Access to Training Grounds

  1. Namboole Annex: Via Northern Bypass → Namboole Roundabout
  2. Wankulukuku: Via Busega → Natete → Kabusu
  3. KISU Grounds: Via Kalerwe → Bukoto
  4. Kadiba Mengo: Via Makerere Hill Rd → Nakulabye → Balintuma Rd
  5. Kyambogo Grounds: Via Jinja Rd → Kyambogo Junction

Access to Game Venue

Mandela National Stadium, Namboole: Via Yusuf Lule Rd → Mulago → Kalerwe → Northern Bypass → Namboole Roundabout

Traffic Diversions and Restrictions

  1. Naalya: Trucks diverted to Kyaliwajjala–Ssonde
  2. Seeta: Trucks redirected to Namugongo
  3. Kinawataka: No truck access to Kireka
  4. Bweyogerere: Vehicles rerouted to Kinawataka Rd via Jokas Hotel
  5. Kireka Trading Centre: No vehicle access from Hared Petrol Station
  6. Kireka–Jokas stretch: Reserved for pedestrian access only

Parking Guidelines

  1. VIP Parking: Southern Wing of Mandela Stadium, for accredited vehicles only
  2. General Parking: Directed by traffic police; accreditation is mandatory

Safety and Escort Protocols

  1. Heavy police presence along all official travel routes
  2. Police escort vehicles assigned to all team convoys
  3. Strict adherence to traffic regulations is required

SP Kananura urged members of the public to follow all traffic officer instructions, plan their journeys early, and expect some delays during game days. “Let’s all cooperate and ensure Uganda delivers a safe and smooth CHAN 2024 tournament,” he said.
