After Humiliation in Mityana North, Kiwanda should step aside and not campaign for CEC

Kampala, Uganda: I was shocked this week to witness Kiwanda Ssuubi, fresh from a humiliating rejection in Mityana North, shamelessly launching a bid for re-election to the NRM’s Central Executive Committee (CEC). How can a leader so decisively dismissed by his own constituents now claim to have the political capital to represent the entire Central Region?

This is not just political tone-deafness; it is arrogance. It is a slap in the face to the people of Mityana North, who sent a clear and thunderous message at the ballot box: Kiwanda, your time is up.

The CEC is not a rehabilitation centre for rejected politicians. It is the strategic engine of the National Resistance Movement. It sets the tone, defines the agenda, and steers the political direction of the party. Anyone vying for a seat at that table must be credible, electable, and trusted by the people. Kiwanda is none of those things.

Some may argue that a loss in Parliament doesn’t disqualify one from CEC. But this wasn’t just any loss—it was a political collapse. His own backyard, the very constituency he once represented, no longer believes in his leadership. If he cannot mobilize Mityana North, how can he claim the moral and political authority to mobilize the entire Buganda sub-region?

We must stop normalizing political failure. The NRM is at a critical crossroads where it must prioritise rejuvenation over recycled mediocrity. The future demands leaders with authentic grassroots support—not career politicians surviving on nostalgia.

For the integrity of the party, for the morale of its supporters, and for the sake of honest leadership, Kiwanda should bow out of the CEC race. Let him reflect, retool, and rebuild—if the people ever ask him to return.

Until then, Kiwanda must do the honourable thing; Spare us the embarrassment and Step aside.

Hakim Kyeswa is an aspiring candidate for the position of NRM Vice Chairperson for Central Region.
