Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has confirmed that 12 top clubs will participate in the 2025 Kagame Cup, set to take place from September 2 to 15 in Dar es Salaam.
CECAFA Executive Director Auka Gecheo confirmed the development on Tuesday, emphasizing the tournament’s growing competitiveness and importance as a preparatory platform for continental club football.
“We are happy to announce that the tournament will take place September 2–15 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania,” said Gecheo. “We expect to have a more competitive tournament as most of the teams will use it to prepare ahead of the 2025/2026 CAF competitions.”
Among the 12 teams are 10 clubs from CECAFA member states, two from host country Tanzania, and one invited club from Southern Africa.
Uganda will be represented by newly crowned Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC, joining a lineup that includes El Merriekh SC Bentiu (South Sudan), Mlandege SC (Zanzibar), Al Hilal (Sudan), Kenya Police FC (Kenya), Ethiopia Insurance (Ethiopia), MCC FC (Somalia), APR FC (Rwanda), Aigle Noir FC (Burundi), ASAS Djibouti Telecom (Djibouti), and Tanzanian powerhouses Young Africans SC and Simba SC.
The Kagame Cup is bankrolled by Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who has consistently sponsored the tournament with an annual prize purse of $60,000 to boost regional football competitiveness.
The 2024 edition was won by Zambia’s Red Arrows, who beat Rwanda’s APR FC in the final held at KMC Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Organizers anticipate a tougher contest this year as teams sharpen their squads ahead of CAF engagements.
