CHAN 2024: Cranes regroup after Algeria humbling, focus turns on Guinea clash

Uganda Cranes players stretch during a light recovery session at FUFA-Kadiba Stadium on Tuesday, a day after their 3-0 CHAN 2024 loss to Algeria at Mandela National Stadium.

Kampala, Uganda: Uganda Cranes returned to training on Tuesday following their bruising 3-0 defeat to Algeria in their CHAN 2024 opener, with focus now turning to Friday’s must-win clash against Guinea.

The light recovery session, held at FUFA-Kadiba Stadium, aimed to lift morale and recalibrate tactics as pressure mounts on head coach Morley Byekwaso and his assistant, Fred Muhumuza.

“We played a team that is better than us, but the players and us coaches will not frown and drop our heads. We must rise again and make ourselves count,” said Muhumuza after Tuesday’s session.

The technical bench is expected to ring changes in the starting XI, with some departments coming under heavy criticism after Monday’s underwhelming show at Mandela National Stadium.

Kadiba, a facility built with FIFA’s support, hosted the closed-door drills which included stretching, tactical corrections and a renewed team talk stressing urgency and improvement.

Uganda’s next Group B tie against Guinea on Friday, August 8, is now viewed as a defining fixture if the Cranes are to keep quarter-final hopes alive in the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship.
