Is courtship important before marriage? Here is the truth

Kampala, Uganda: In a generation where love often feels rushed and relationships are tested by time, media personality Hasifa Nabbanja, commonly known as Haffy Powers, has spoken out on the value of courtship before marriage, warning against impulsive unions that often end in heartbreak.

The Sanyuka TV presenter believes courtship is a crucial phase that allows partners to understand each other beyond the glamour of weddings or the pressure to start families quickly. “I believe in courtship before marriage because it’s where real understanding and commitment begin,” she said.

Haffy Powers noted that many modern relationships fail not because of lack of love, but due to compatibility issues that would have been detected during a proper courtship.

“In that time, you get to know who you really want to spend most of your life with. You also learn whether the person is genuinely committed to you or not,” she explained.

In an age where dating shows and instant engagements are gaining popularity, Haffy’s message serves as a reminder that lasting love is often built on time, trust, and shared values, not just chemistry or excitement.

Her comments have sparked online debate, with many Ugandans agreeing that the rising divorce rates, especially among newlyweds, can be attributed to the absence of proper courtship and emotional maturity.
