Kampala, Uganda: Uganda Police has issued a list of prohibited items ahead of Friday’s CHAN 2024 double-header at Mandela National Stadium, urging fans to comply with tightened security measures to ensure a safe matchday environment.
The stadium will host two Group C fixtures on Friday, August 8: Algeria vs. South Africa at 5:00 PM and Guinea vs. Uganda at 8:00 PM, as part of the ongoing TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
In a joint security review held with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and CAF representatives, police confirmed that prior matches at the venue were largely incident-free, with only isolated violations.
“The general public observed discipline, with only a few individuals attempting violations, who were promptly and firmly dealt with,” the police statement reads in part.
To prevent disruptions and guarantee public safety, fans have been warned against carrying the following items to Namboole:
Among the banned items at Namboole include;
- Airhorns (vuvuzelas)
- Whistles
- Glass bottles and cans
- Large bags and suitcases
- Video cameras
- Tools (e.g., hammers)
- Flasks
- Smoke canisters
- Fireworks
- Umbrellas
Police urged all attendees to arrive early and cooperate with security teams during entry checks. “We urge all attendees to comply with these regulations for their safety and the safety of others,” the statement concluded.
The Uganda Cranes will be counting on a full-house home crowd to bounce back from their opening loss against Algeria and revive their chances of progressing to the CHAN 2024 knockout stages.
