Kampala, Uganda: The Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, has defended the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s long-standing decision to field President Yoweri Museveni as its sole presidential flag bearer for over four decades, saying no other candidate has ever matched his capability.
Baryomunsi’s remarks come amid renewed public debate on internal democracy within the NRM, which has never had a contested race for its top flag bearer since its formation.
“Every election cycle presents a clear opportunity for any Ugandan who meets the constitutional requirements to stand for president,” Baryomunsi said. “But none of the aspirants within or outside the NRM has proved to be a match for President Museveni.”
The senior minister argued that the party’s continued endorsement of Museveni is not rooted in dictatorship, as critics claim, but in strategic consensus and the need to keep the party strong and stable.
“We always ask what is good for the NRM and what keeps it very strong. That is our principle, not coercion,” he added.
President Museveni has led Uganda since 1986 and has remained unopposed within the NRM for over 40 years, unlike other major parties, which periodically change their leaders or flag bearers.
Baryomunsi insisted that Museveni still possesses the vision, energy, and leadership qualities required to carry the NRM through yet another election cycle, noting that the President’s track record makes it difficult for any aspiring contender within the party to gain comparable trust.
