In Summary: Sironko Woman MP hopeful Sharifa Mariam Maruti has donated a laundry bar soap-making machine to empower women and youth, promising more grassroots development projects if elected.
Sironko, Uganda: Independent Woman MP aspirant Sharifa Mariam Maruti has boosted women and youth in Sironko Town Council with a laundry bar soap-making machine, in a bid to fight unemployment and promote income-generating projects in the district.
Speaking to voters on Wednesday, 6th August 2025, Maruti said the project is part of her broader plan to empower women and youth—groups she described as “the most economically disadvantaged” in Sironko.
“The mothers told me they wanted to keep busy while earning an income. That’s why I bought this bar soap-making machine. We shall also train you to make liquid soap,” Maruti explained.
Alongside the machine, she fulfilled a previous pledge by donating a large saucepan to the Mpogo Women Saving Group in Bukhulo Sub-county to help them during community functions.
The aspirant urged residents to prepare for a “people-powered victory,” calling on her supporters to be vigilant during elections.
“I don’t have the army, but I have you, my ground soldiers. Let’s work together to protect our victory,” she told the crowd.
Maruti also dismissed rumours that she had been bribed to step down from the race, stating, “There’s no amount of money that can buy my candidacy. No one can buy me.”
She will face off against NRM’s Asha Nabulo Mafabi (daughter of the district party chairman), Florence Nambozo Mayoga (State Minister for Karamoja and incumbent), and FDC’s Phiona Banga, among others.
