The newly formed opposition PFF party kicked off its first mobilisation tour in Acholi, with Gulu City markets, and plans to traverse all 32 wards and 133 cells before expanding to the wider sub-region.
Gulu City, Uganda: The opposition People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) party has kicked off its first mobilisation and exposure tour in the Acholi sub-region, beginning with engagements across different markets in Gulu City.
According to Hon. Nono Denis, a mobiliser and head of security for PFF in Gulu City, and also the area councillor for Areaga Ward, the party plans to visit all the wards and cells in the city before traversing the entire Acholi sub-region to introduce its agenda to the people.
“We are going to all the 32 wards and 133 cells within Gulu City, and we will traverse the entire Acholi sub-region to introduce PFF to our people,” Nono stated.
He expressed confidence that PFF would win over new supporters, citing the “strength, quality, and integrity” of its leaders, many of whom defected from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) after unresolved leadership disagreements at the party’s Najjanankumbi headquarters.
While unable to estimate current membership in Acholi, Nono said the party already has a presence in Gulu City, Pader, Kitgum, and Omoro districts, with plans to penetrate Nwoya and Agago. PFF has opened offices in Kitgum and Arua, secured premises for a Gulu City office, and intends to establish offices in all districts.
At the national level, PFF has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) to avoid fielding candidates against each other in constituencies where one party already has a contender. Nono said they are open to similar arrangements with FDC and the National Unity Platform (NUP), but ruled out cooperation with the ruling NRM.
“We are waiting for our headteacher to talk to the headteacher of NUP and agree. We are also open to work with other opposition pasrties. We cannot work with NRM because we need to remove them from government,” Nono said.
He accused the NRM of failing to deliver on promises, arguing that unmet pledges, such as wealth creation initiatives, have left Acholi the second-poorest sub-region in the country after Karamoja.
Gulu City Woman MP Hon. Betty Aol Ochan, PFF vice chair for Greater Northern Uganda and former Leader of Opposition in Parliament, said the party’s symbol is a mobile phone, representing communication and its greeting sign is the letter “V” for victory.
“A phone is our sign. Use it to call and tell people the good about PFF. The FDC key is no longer trusted; they have entered the yellow bus which is about to break down,” Aol said.
However, PFF leaders say their mobilisation efforts face challenges from security agencies, with police in Gulu City blocking them from holding processions. The party has instead turned to market visits to reach large crowds.
The PFF mobilisation team in Acholi includes Hon. Betty Aol Ochan, Northern Uganda activity coordinator Lalam Florence, Acholi Sub-region women’s league leader Lapat Susan, and Acholi West coordinator Abonga Moses.
