Kitgum, Uganda: Police in Kitgum are holding in custody eight suspects linked to forgery and bribery during the recent Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) recruitment exercise in Central Division, Kitgum Municipality.
According to a police statement issued on Monday, August 11, the suspects were handed over by UPDF officials after being intercepted in two separate incidents on August 9.
In the first incident, five recruits, Okurut David, Byaruhanga Alfred, Olanya Phillip, Kidega Richard, and Oryema John Bosco, were found to have submitted forged academic documents during the morning verification process. They were immediately handed over to Kitgum Central Police Station (CPS) and charged with forgery.
Later in the evening, three others, Torach Isaac, Okema Samuel, and Kitara Joel, were arrested while allegedly attempting to bribe recruitment officials.
Police say the group had organized a total of Shs900,000, reportedly intended for the team leader, with contributions of Shs600,000 from Torach, Shs200,000 from Okema, and Shs100,000 from Kitara.
Exhibits, including the forged documents and the bribe money, are in police custody as investigations continue. Police have opened case files and recorded witness statements, with the suspects currently detained at CPS Kitgum.
