Northern Uganda: The journalism fraternity in Northern Uganda is reeling from a double tragedy following the deaths of two respected journalists, Moses Alwala in Lira City and Buleni Martin in Madi Okollo District, in unrelated incidents on Friday.
Alwala, a celebrated voice at Radio North, Unity FM, and most recently Voice of the Gospel, died on Friday afternoon at Gift Life Health Care Clinic in Lira City after a week-long battle with illness.
His colleague, Francis Oyet of Voice of the Gospel 91.7 FM, said doctors had informed the family that his liver was severely damaged and there was no hope for recovery.
“According to the doctor’s report, Alwala’s liver was severely damaged, and there was no other hope,” Oyet said. “But all in all, we have God who is faithful and just.”
Tributes pour in
Tributes are pouring in from fellow journalists and community members who remember him as a passionate communicator and a humble professional.
Patrick Ebong, a freelance journalist with Nation Media Group, Lira Bureau, said, “It’s with profound shock and sorrow that I have learnt of the demise of Moses Alwala, a colleague I worked with and mentored. It’s so sad that the Almighty God called you at a tender age, a time when your family had banked a lot of hope on you. May your soul rest in eternal peace. Amen”
Meanwhile, in the West Nile Sub-region, Buleni Martin, Chief News Editor of Voice of Madi FM, has died in a road accident.
Robert Elema, a correspondent with the Daily Monitor, reported that Buleni was involved in a tragic accident while traveling from Madi Okollo District to Arua City.
According to Elema, sources informed him that the deceased collided with an over-speeding motorcycle rider at Ogoko Corner in Madi Okollo District, along the Arua–Kampala Highway, at approximately 1:00 PM today
“Eyewitnesses told me the motorcycle was speeding and lost control at the corner, leading to a head-on collision with Buleni. The impact was severe, and unfortunately, Buleni succumbed to injuries on the spot,” Elema said.
Both deaths have sent shockwaves through the Northern Uganda media fraternity, with colleagues remembering the two as passionate communicators committed to telling the stories of their communities.
