Kampala, Uganda: The Director of Communication and Public Affairs at Parliament of Uganda, Chris Obore, has praised Speaker Anita Among’s recent visit to the Vatican as a show of faith in spiritual priority over individuals who seek visits to shrines for political success.
Obore, a sworn ally of Speaker Among, was commenting on his Principal’s recent travel to meet Pope Leo XIV, which he described as a trip reflecting devotion rather than political calculation.
“For Ms Among to get blessings from the Holy See means she prioritises God in her life. Did they want her to visit a witch doctor’s shrine?” he said, stressing, “Ms Among is not the type to indulge in witchcraft.”
Hon Among, who is also Bukedea Woman MP, recently met and received Papal Blessings from Pope Leo XIV, just two weeks before her showdown with Kamuli District Woman MP and former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga for the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) second vice chairperson (female) seat at Kololo Independence Grounds later this month.
The statement from Obore appeared to reference Among’s rival Kadaga, who in 2016 visited a shrine at Nhenda Hill, Nakigo sub-county, Iganga District, shortly after she retained the Speaker position in the 10th Parliament.
Kadaga came out to defend the visit as respecting clan traditions and promoting tourism, saying, “These are my roots and culture.”
But Obore said Among is unconcerned with Kadaga’s criticisms, stating, “The CEC leadership is a matter for NRM party members, not a personal spat between Ms Among and Ms Kadaga.”
While addressing NRM leaders and 2026 flag bearers in Buyende District, Among reflected on the criticism over her stance on homosexuality, saying, “After all, the NRM is practiced in Uganda, not Canada or America.”
She went on to reiterate respect for Kadaga despite recent verbal attacks: “I have too much respect for Rt Hon Kadaga; however much she attacks me, I will not respond. I was brought up in a proper way. That is the woman in me you need as a leader.”
