Oyam, Uganda: The Foundation for Inclusive Community Help (FICH), in partnership with Anyeke Catholic Parish, has trained over 100 women from the parish Women’s Guild in life skills aimed at addressing parenting challenges and promoting positive child upbringing.
The training, held on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption on August 15, was conducted under the theme “Mother Mary: A Model Mother in Nurturing Problem-Solving Skills and Respect.”
Rev Fr Moses Pascal Omara, the Parish Priest of Anyeke Catholic Parish, said the session focused on nurturing healthy parent–child relationships, addressing behavioral challenges with patience and understanding, and discouraging harmful practices such as corporal punishment and verbal abuse.
“Some parents believe that without beating, a child cannot learn. But today we’ve gained knowledge to guide children with kindness, patience, and respect,” Fr. Omara said, noting that the approach was rooted in Christian values and inspired by the example of Mother Mary in raising Jesus.
Betty Atoo, the Chairperson of the Women’s Guild, said the training was organized to expose members to knowledge from different organizations, adding that the lessons will help women identify gaps in their children’s development, especially in life skills.

Sarah Ocen, a guild member from Alao Chapel, appreciated the session on active listening, saying it reminded parents of the importance of hearing children out and responding with empathy.
Kandi Alum, a life skills trainer with FICH, said the program was tailored to contextualize problem-solving skills and parenting responsibilities within Christian teachings.
“We looked at the attributes of Mother Mary in nurturing problem-solving skills and related them to her role as the mother of Jesus Christ,” Alum said.
