CHAN 2024

From despair to belief: Okello, Mukundane, lead Cranes’ turnaround at CHAN 2024

Kampala, Uganda: The Uganda Cranes’ campaign at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 has drastically transformed from early disappointment to a spirited revival, thanks to five standout performers who have ignited belief in a historic quarterfinal qualification.

After a crushing 3–0 opening defeat to Algeria in Kampala, the Cranes roared back with a 3–0 win over Guinea and a 2–0 triumph against Niger at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium, propelling them to the top of Group C.

The team’s resurgence has been anchored on tactical discipline, high pressing, and ruthless finishing—but more importantly, individual brilliance from key players has made the difference.

Crane’s Goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa has been a commanding presence between the sticks. Even in the loss to Algeria, he pulled off vital saves, and his man-of-the-match performance against Niger, including a critical close-range stop, secured Uganda’s second successive clean sheet.

Midfielder Reagan Mpande has embodied tireless energy in the engine room. His headed goal opened the scoring against Guinea, and his relentless pressing drew the foul that earned Uganda a penalty against Niger.

Terrific Playmaker Allan Okello has provided creativity and control in midfield. He netted against Guinea and, despite missing a penalty versus Niger, redeemed himself by heading in the opener and assisting the second goal in the same match.

Winger Joel Sserunjogi has been a menace to defenders with pace and direct dribbling. He set up Mpande’s goal against Guinea and thundered in a decisive strike against Niger. However, his suspension means Uganda must cope without him in their next fixture.

Defender Hilary Mukundane has held the backline together with composure and discipline. Strong in aerial duels and positioning, his consistency has been central to two consecutive clean sheets, allowing the full-backs to advance with confidence.

With these five players leading Uganda’s charge, the Cranes have reignited their CHAN 2024 campaign, turning an early setback into a story of revival and belief ahead of their decisive group-stage clash.
