Man 20, arrested for stabbing colleague to death in Lamwo NRM celebrations

Lamwo, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Aswa East region are holding a 20-year-old man accused of stabbing his rival to death during celebrations that followed the National Resistance Movement (NRM) local council primary elections in Agoro Sub-county, Lamwo District.

Inspector Joe Oloya, the Aswa East Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), confirmed the report on Saturday, August 16, saying the incident occurred on the night of August 14, 2025, at Agoro Trading Centre.

According to Oloya, the incident involved the deceased, Emmanuel Okot, 26, and the suspect, Emmanuel Okeny, both residents of the same village. The two reportedly picked a quarrel over a woman, only identified as Atuk, while jubilating the victory of candidate Charles Onyango in the primaries.

“The altercation started when the deceased allegedly grabbed Atuk while the suspect was dancing with her. In retaliation, the suspect went home, picked up a knife, returned to the scene, and stabbed the victim once on the head,” Oloya explained.

Okot was rushed to Agoro Health Centre III but succumbed to the injury at around 3:00 a.m. Police, led by Lamwo District CID Officer SP Doreen Kaakyo, visited the scene, documented evidence, recovered exhibits, and recorded witness statements. The suspect was later arrested for further investigation.

The deceased’s body was taken to Padibe Health Centre IV for postmortem examination.

In a related incident, the Territorial Police in Kitgum District are investigating a case of murder by mob action in which an unidentified man was beaten to death on suspicion of petty theft.

Inspector Joe Oloya confirmed the incident, saying it occurred on Saturday, August 16, 2025, in Pan-dwong Village, Yepa Parish, Mucwini Sub-county.

Preliminary reports indicate that the deceased, whose identity is yet to be established, was accused of stealing Shs200,000 from a student. He was apprehended by locals and fatally assaulted.

Oloya said a murder case has been registered at Kitgum Central Police Station, adding that police documented the crime scene and recovered a UPDF camouflage shirt and a sweater. The body was later taken to Kitgum Main Hospital for a postmortem.

He condemned the act, warning locals against mob justice. “We strongly urge the public to refrain from mob action. All suspected offenders should be handed over to police to allow the law to take its course,” Oloya cautioned.
