NRM Tribunal dismisses petitions against Wakida, Katooko, in Kibuku Primaries

Kampala, Uganda: The NRM Election Disputes Tribunal has dismissed petitions challenging the results of the July 17 NRM primaries for Woman MP and Kabweri County MP in Kibuku District, upholding the victories of Ms. Katooko Sylvia Damba (Suubi) and Dr. Wakida Patrick Godfrey (Mu-Russia).

The petitions, filed by incumbent MPs Hon. Mugole Mauku David Stephen and Hon. Namuyangu Kacha Jenipher, alleged voting irregularities including the use of unverified voter registers, inflated numbers, voter intimidation, and obstruction of election officials.

During the proceedings, the Tribunal heard testimonies from both parties, with the Petitioners presenting affidavits from various witnesses to substantiate their claims. However, the Tribunal identified several inconsistencies in the evidence provided by the Petitioners, leading to doubts about the credibility of their allegations.

Before the Tribunal’s decision, Honorable Mugole and Honorable Namuyangu appeared on the national radio station UBC, where they seemed to recognize that their case lacked substance. They assured listeners that, regardless of the flag, they intend to return and contest in the upcoming general elections. Both are currently serving as Members of Parliament.

In its final ruling, the Tribunal asserted that even if some irregularities occurred, they were limited in scope and did not materially affect the overall election results. Notably, the margin of victory for both Ms. Katooko and Dr. Wakida was significant, with Ms. Katooko leading by 23,546 votes over Honorable Namuyangu.

Reacting to the Tribunal’s ruling, Ms. Katooko expressed her gratitude, stating, “Dear friends, the Tribunal has dismissed the petition against me and Dr. Wakida, where allegations of malpractice, defamation, voter bribery, non-use of the voter register, violence, among others had been raised. Justice has prevailed, and the journey has just begun.”

“I sincerely thank you, my voters, for your patience, resilience, and trust.” She added, extending her appreciation to her family, local leaders, and supporters, whilst calling on Hon Namuyangu and her followers to join her in advancing unity and service for the people of Kibuku.

Dr. Wakida echoed her sentiments, expressing confidence in the Tribunal’s findings. He emphasized the importance of integrity in the electoral process, stating, “This was an election that was about lining up physically in broad daylight.” He called on his opponents to work together for the betterment of Kibuku and Bugwere, encouraging celebrants to do so respectfully and without insult.

The ruling reinforces the legitimacy of the NRM primary elections in Kibuku District and clears the way for Ms. Katooko and Dr. Wakida to contest as the party’s flag bearers in the 2026 general elections.
