Agule, Uganda: Over 400 widows from all five wards of Agule Town Council have pledged support to Hon. David Ochwa as he prepares to contest for Agule County Member of Parliament as an independent candidate.
The widows met Hon. Ochwa on Friday at Agule Archdeaconry Headquarters, where many admitted having supported other candidates during the NRM primaries due to the prevailing political wave at that time.
Hon. Ochwa welcomed their support, emphasizing his commitment to addressing the challenges widows face as single parents.
“I am happy you have opened up to rally behind me in the house of God. If I have ever wronged anyone, let us forgive each other. I will be by your side at all times,” Ochwa said.
He also urged widows to contribute to Agule School of Management Sciences, where he serves as director, by supplying maize and beans locally instead of diverting resources elsewhere.
Hon. Ochwa pledged to empower each widow with maize and bean seeds to boost production and ensure a steady income, noting that the market for their produce is guaranteed.
He defended his decision to run as an independent, citing mismanagement of the NRM primaries. “It’s no longer a rumor that I am contesting as an independent. In 2021, Vice President Jessica Alupo and Minister Jacob Oboth Oboth ran as independents and were not blocked,” Ochwa said.
During the meeting, the incumbent MP distributed gomasses and UGX 10,000 for transport to the widows, promising to revive county programs he initiated eight years ago that had stalled under other leadership.
Widows, including Titin Grace and Akurut Janet, expressed optimism, commending Ochwa for listening to their concerns and pledging to replicate the initiative across all sub-counties.
Titin Grace noted that receiving support from Ochwa had shifted her loyalty, while Akurut urged fellow widows to remain steadfast and trust candidates who actively engage with their needs.
