Kampala, Uganda: Police in Kampala have arrested 12 suspects accused of selling fake tickets for Monday’s Total CHAN 2024 group match between Uganda Cranes and South Africa at Namboole National Stadium.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the arrests while addressing the weekly joint security press briefing at Naguru on Monday, August 18, warning fans against falling prey to fraudsters.
“There are people who have tried to sell fake tickets or duplicates, and some have not survived it. We nabbed 12, and they are facing music with us now. We do not want you to fall victim by thinking that you can buy any ticket other than online,” Kituuma said.
He cautioned fans against travelling to the stadium without having purchased tickets through the official online portal, stressing that no one without a verified e-ticket would be allowed entry.
“If you go into the portals and you find the tickets are over, go and get to the nearest screen and watch this match. But do not be convinced that by any magic or trick you will enter Namboole without an online ticket. It will be an embarrassment on your side because we shall not allow you in there, and if you try to use those tricks, then we shall keep you in safe custody,” he added.
Police further urged supporters to heed communication from the Local Organising Committee confirming tickets were sold out, warning that conmen outside the stadium were targeting desperate fans.
Uganda Cranes play the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a tense clash this evening at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, a match whose tickets were sold by Friday afternoon.
