Kamwenge, Uganda: The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev Samuel Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, has cautioned politicians against seeking witchcraft and corruption as avenues to secure victory in the 2026 general elections, warning that such practices reflect “spiritual immaturity.”

Preaching at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in East Rwenzori Diocese during a thanksgiving service to mark the diocese’s 16th anniversary, Archbishop Kazimba expressed disappointment over reports of leaders turning to witch doctors in pursuit of political power.

“How do you go with bags of money, shed blood, and ask a mere hen to help you win a vote? That is a sign of spiritual dwarfism,” Kazimba charged, stressing that true leadership should be anchored in integrity and faith in God.

The Archbishop also condemned widespread corruption among leaders, pointing to cases of individuals “sleeping in houses built with stolen iron sheets.” He challenged Ugandans to reflect on their conscience and build wealth through honest means, not theft or exploitation.

As Uganda edges closer to the 2026 elections, Kazimba urged political leaders to exhibit emotional maturity, perseverance, and tolerance, even in the face of defeat or criticism. “We cannot have leaders who collapse emotionally when they lose. Leadership requires patience and self-control,” he emphasized.

On matters of church sustainability, the Archbishop encouraged bishops to expand clergy training and initiate income-generating projects to reduce overreliance on offertories.

He called on the government to do the same, pointing to the dangers of external dependence, particularly after Western nations cut aid to Uganda over its anti-LBGTQ stance.

“As the government of Uganda, led by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, condemned LGBTQ practices and the West responded by cutting donations, we must generate our own income so we can stand independently,” he said.
